The fabulous Chaka Khan has been cranking out the hits for close to 40 years and over that time, fans have seen her evolve and change every step of the way. The stunning diva, known for showing off her curves in tight women's urban clothes and for letting her wild curls hang out, recently opened up about her life now and what's changed over the years. Khan sat down with The Huffington Post to discuss everything, including her upcoming appearance at the Essence Music Festival as well as creating new music.
According to the news outlet, Khan admitted she's never been stick-thin or the most health-conscious, but that all changed when she was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes.
"My weight loss had to occur because I was diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes and I also had high blood pressure," Khan told the publication. "And I've been on medication for that since last year until the beginning of this year. And I ended up going, 'Oh, no, no, no, no, this is enough. I can't live like this.'"
The soulful singer also decided to focus on her health because of the fact that she recently adopted her granddaughter, giving her a new reason to stick around for the long haul.
"[She] was really my first and major influence to lose weight and get healthy so I can be here for her," Khan told the news outlet. "What I did was stopped eating and went on a strict unconditional fast for a couple of months. And went off meat, became vegan, stopped all the dairy, stopped all the meat."
Rolling Stone reports Khan is excited to head back to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival, as she bonded with many local residents during the 2011 concert. After seeing the destruction still lingering from Hurricane Katrina, Khan paired with a group called the Superlife Transformation Program to help transform the lives of 150 women who were emotionally and physically devastated from the hurricane. She's kept in touch with the women over the past year and is excited about seeing them in person.
"A hundred and fifty women were totally on the upward spiral to a better life, to a super life," Khan told the news outlet on how far the women have come. "They were closing on houses. One girl started an all-girl band, and I'm gonna be singing with her when I go down there for their graduation. The women will share some of their plans and talk about their future. Then they will take an oath to assist and foster and mentor a new crop of women. So it's great. A little love goes a really, really long way."
