Jay-Z continues to be a leader in the rap, clothing and now sports industries, so it’s no wonder he’s looking to get a bit more theatrical when it comes to his music videos. The rapper recently released a trailer for the video for his upcoming single, “Picasso Baby.” According to BET, the video is set to premiere Aug. 2 following the season finale of “Real Time with Bill Maher” on HBO.
In the trailer, which the rapper put up on his Life and Times website, Jay discusses his art and why he’s chosen to dig deeper and spend more money to create videos that mean something.
“Rap is thinking out loud, and you’re putting your fears and your vulnerabilities and your insecurities to music,” Jay says in the clip. “Concerts pretty much are performance art. In a smaller venue, it’s a bit more intimate, so you feel the energy of the people.”
To ensure he got it right, Jay reportedly spent six hours repeating the lyrics to the single while filming the video at the Pace Gallery in New York City. The video not only stars Hov, but also artist Marina Abramovic, rapper Wale, actor Alan Cumming and actress Taraji P. Henson.
